They follow thin, beige stalks that run in an arc from the left side of the image through the middle towards the right edge, like a garland. At the left, top and right edges the leaves are cropped, so the composition seems to extend beyond the wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe leaves have smooth, sculptural shading and distinct edges, which is why they look like a bas-relief or porcelain – an illusion created by light and shadow in the image. The background is ivory with delicately rubbed-back brushwork, and the only accents are pale grey and sandy shadows between the leaves.
