The large plumes lean to the right. The tallest plume stands in the left half of the image, just off centre, and reaches almost to the top edge. The right half is filled with a dense cluster of four huge plumes. The outermost one extends beyond the right edge, so the field seems to carry on further. On the left side of the image, lower down, grow two smaller plumes. The plumes are cream with a touch of light sandy beige, while the background is a misty, grey-blue haze with worn, rubbed-back patches. At the bottom, between the arcs of curving leaves, a muted sage green shows through. Fine, fibrous brushstrokes make the plumes look like down. On a wall 260 cm high, the tallest plume is about 130 cm long, the plumes in the cluster on the right of the image about 100 cm, and the two smaller ones on the left about 80 cm.
