Cream, billowing clouds sit on both sides of the whale and beneath it. Dark waves with white foam fill the bottom: on the left they reach about 60 cm, and the tallest stands on the right, where the foam rises to about 100 cm. The whole looks like a print on aged paper. The name alludes to ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world”, that is, Japanese art of the Edo period, known mainly for woodblock prints.
