The largest, a white one, has its head right of centre, in the upper part of the image, turned in profile to the right; its mane falls in waves over the neck. In the middle runs a light chestnut foal with a white blaze on its forehead and a darker, short mane. On the left you see three white horses: two look straight at you, the third turns its head to the right, and the first from the left vanishes into blue shadow. A sixth horse, also white, runs by the right edge. On the left stand the trunks of birches, and in the upper right corner the forest brightens to a warm cream. At the bottom lies snow, with rust-coloured blades of grass in the left corner. The brushstrokes are soft and broad. On a wall 260 cm high with a full crop (about 465 cm wide), the white horse measures about 210 cm from the ears to the hooves and the foal about 165 cm. The heads fall between roughly 130 and 235 cm above the floor.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eHow can you tell it from the other herds in the forest?\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eYou can tell this design from BIRCH RUN and FIRST SNOW, the other two herds among birches, by its whiteness: here almost all the horses are white, and the only warmer accent is the foal. The direction is different too. The herd does not rush straight at the viewer but passes by at an angle, to the right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhich interior does it suit?\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn an entrance hall the design is visible from the threshold: the horses run along the wall as if leading deeper into the house. Put a low bench or chest against the wall; furniture up to about 60 cm high will hide only the snow and the hooves. In a dining room with an oval table of bleached oak and chairs in light blue linen, the chair backs reach the horses' chests at most. Avoid a pendant lamp hanging low right by the wall, because seen from the entrance it would cover the white horse's head.
