THUNDERHEAD - dark whale wall mural for a bedroom and library

The sky coils into a ring as before a storm, and in its bright centre a white whale swims. The rest of the wall sinks into deep navy, so the room becomes darker and more intimate. It is a design for a room where a dark wall is intended: a bedroom, library, study.

What does the design show?

A white whale swims to the left through the middle of the wall. It raises its tail high on the right of the image and lowers a long fin; beneath it you can see a second, smaller, grey one. It is surrounded by a ring of swirling clouds in turquoise, sea green and white, brightened at the top like a gap of light. Outside the ring, especially at the sides and at the bottom, the image darkens to a deep navy. The brushstrokes arrange themselves in arcs around the whale and give an impression of movement. The whole looks as if painted with thick paint and a broad brush.

On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 463 cm wide and the whale about 285 cm long. The tip of the smaller, grey fin falls about 85 cm above the floor, and the tip of the tail about 30 cm below the ceiling.

What sets it apart from the similar CLOUDBREAK in the same collection is the amount of dark colour and the colour temperature. There the sky is open, with pale blue and a warm, creamy light in the clouds. Here the clouds close into a ring, the palette is cool, and the navy takes in the sides and the whole lower part of the wall. If you prefer a brighter wall, choose the other one.

Which interior does it suit?

As a dark whale wall mural, THUNDERHEAD suits above all a bedroom. Above a low bed the whole whale remains visible, and the navy at the bottom goes with graphite linen, smoked oak and blackened steel. In a library the dark sides of the image blend into the bookshelves, and the turquoise ring remains the only bright place on the wall; velvet in a marine shade, brass and marble go with it. The design can also be used in a hotel suite, behind a bed with a low, wide headboard.

Keep in mind the light and the size of the room. The navy takes in the sides and the bottom, so in the evening, with a single lamp, the bright ring with the whale is seen best. In a bedroom that is usually an advantage, but in a small room with one window leave the other walls light. To see the large whale in full, you need a few steps of distance.

How do you choose the size and material?

THUNDERHEAD is a single image printed to the size of your wall; you choose the dimensions, material and crop in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page. To fit the whale together with its tail at a height of 260 cm, the wall should be at least about 3 m wide. On a narrower one, set the crop on the head and the long fin.

The main materials are Mura Vinyl Canvas and Mura Vinyl Intonaco. The first, with the weave of natural canvas, is the most versatile and strengthens the association with a large painting. The second has a trowelled plaster texture and is structured: on it the swirling clouds look like a painting on a wall. As an alternative, consider Mura Vinyl Sabbia, with a pronounced coarse sand grain; this material is neither smooth nor satin, and up close you can see its grain even on the white fin and the turquoise background. There is also Mura Natur, an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic, whose matt finish goes with the deep, dark background.
