ABOVE THE TIDE - whale wall mural above the waves for a living room

Most of this is sky. Sandy beige with vertical brush marks fills almost the whole wall, the whale hovers in its upper part, and the sea stays low, a dark line just above the floor. In a living or dining room this gives a large, warm picture that leaves space for the furniture.

What does the design show?

ABOVE THE TIDE shows a whale with its head turned to the left. It has a large, pale, striped belly and a grey-blue back decorated with gold spirals, and it raises its tail in the upper right corner. On a wall 260 cm high with the full crop (about 460 cm wide), the whale is about 3 m long. It begins about 1 m from the left edge, the back by the head is about 2 m above the floor, and the tip of the fin comes down to about 90 cm. The sandy-beige background has vertical brush marks. Beige and cream clouds with gold outlines are densest at the sides, and one cloud hangs at the top, above the whale’s head. Along the bottom run dark navy waves with three white crests, of which the two outer ones curl into spirals; together with the foam they reach about 45 cm above the floor at most. The gold lines are a printed colour.

How is it different from similar designs?

Of the four whales in cream clouds, this one has the most sky and the lowest sea. In CLOUD VOYAGER, which also swims to the left, the waves are higher, with two large curling crests, and the background shows a linen weave and cooler cloud shadows. Here the background is warmer and sandy, and the gold spirals lie on the back itself. LINEN WHALE and PEARL DRIFTER swim to the right: the first on a linen-coloured background, the second on beige turning into pale blue.

Which interior does it suit?

In a living room, plan this whale and waves wall mural behind the sofa. The back of the sofa will hide the low band of sea, and above it the sky with the whole whale remains, because its fin ends about 90 cm above the floor. Sandy beige goes with linen, bleached oak and travertine, and the gold spirals with the brass of a lamp. In a dining room the table usually stands away from the wall, so from the doorway you see the whole composition together with the waves. In a hallway a fragment is enough: the whale’s head and belly above a slim console, with a wave visible between its legs. If you want the sea to play an equal part, choose furniture on high legs or leave the lower part of the wall free.

How do you choose the size and material?

The composition is a single image printed to the size of your wall, and you set the dimensions, material and crop in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page. On a wall 260 cm high the whale needs about 3 m of width; on a narrower wall, choose what stays in the frame: the head with its gold spirals or the raised tail.

The main materials are Mura Vinyl Canvas and Mura Vinyl Intonaco. The first, the most versatile, has the weave of natural canvas, and with it the sandy background with brush marks looks like a large painting. The second is structured, with a trowelled plaster texture that brings the design closer to a painting on a wall. The alternatives are Mura Vinyl Sabbia, with a pronounced coarse sand grain – it is neither smooth nor satin, so up close the wall will look distinctly grainy – and Mura Natur, an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic.
