AIRBORNE GREY - grey-blue wall mural with a horse in motion

The horse has pushed off the ground and for a moment hangs in the air, with its forelegs tucked up and its mane thrown back. The blue-grey background cools the wall, and the cream mist at the bottom warms it where the furniture will stand. The movement is distinct but soft, blurred at the edges.

What can you see in the design?

AIRBORNE GREY is a single pale, grey horse facing right. Its coat is creamy white, with peach and grey shadows on the flank. The forelock and the upper part of the mane are dark, graphite, while the rest of the mane is pale and streaming. The head, with a white forehead, a dark eye and a pinkish muzzle, sits in the upper right part of the wall, at roughly three quarters of the width; at a height of 260 cm that is about 140–220 cm above the floor. The body fills the middle, and the tail, dark grey at the root, streams out on the left into a sandy streak. The forelegs darken from the knees down and end in pale feathering; the lower hoof sits about 35 cm above the floor. From rump to nose the horse measures about 2.3 m, and with the tail about 3.4 m. The background is blue-grey with a turquoise tint, darker at the top. The bottom and a narrow strip at the right edge turn into a warm cream. Broad brushstrokes and traces of a palette knife are visible everywhere.

Which interiors suit it?

In a bedroom, put the bed under the rump and tail of the horse, that is on the left and in the middle of the wall: the head then stays on the right, above free floor or a low basket. Bedding in shades of grey-blue and sand, bleached oak and linen curtains will echo both parts of the background. In a living room, place a low sofa in duck-egg blue on the left, and on the right at most a low pouffe, below the horse's chest. The design also suits a hotel room in a muted, seaside palette. In daylight the turquoise tint of the background is more distinct, and in the evening, under warm lamps, the cream bottom comes out more strongly.

How do you set the crop on a narrower wall?

At a height of 260 cm the full picture is about 460 cm wide. On a wall narrower than about 3.4 m something has to be trimmed, and it is better if it is the streaming tail. Below about 2.5 m of width the horse will not fit whole: then keep the head, the neck and the forelegs, and move the crop to the right. Leave a little background between the muzzle and the edge of the wall too.
