CHALK AND COAL - white and black horse mural for living room

Two horses stand facing each other and hardly move: one pale as chalk, the other black as coal. Most of the wall remains a plain, warm grey, so the room does not lose light, and all the contrast gathers in one place, where the two heads come close.

What does the design show?

CHALK AND COAL is a pair of horses turned towards each other. The white one stands on the left of the image and almost dissolves into the background: its back and rump are barely marked, leaving a clear head with a dark eye and a grey shadow on the neck. The black one, on the right, is a full, dark silhouette with a tousled mane, a grey sheen on its flank and a tail reaching almost to the ground. Both heads are slightly lowered and fall in the upper part of the wall: the white one a little left of centre, the black one right in the middle. A narrow strip of background remains between the muzzles. On a wall 260 cm high with a full crop (about 460 cm wide), the black horse measures about 210 cm from the ears to the hooves, and the heads sit about 145–220 cm above the floor. The legs go down towards the bottom edge and dissolve into a cream patch with a few sandy streaks. The background has no landscape or horizon: it is a plane in the colour of linen, with the weave of the canvas and traces of a dry brush, which are part of the image.

How does it differ from the other pair in the collection?

The design KINDRED PAIR is kept in the same palette. There both horses are piebald, stand close together and touch heads, and the layout is symmetrical. Here the horses differ in colour, a gap separates them, and the dark weight of the image lies on the right.

Which interior does it suit?

It is closest to a living room with simple forms: a sofa in undyed linen, a table in black oak, a pale resin or concrete floor. A sofa back about 90 cm high will hide only the horses' legs, and the heads stay high above it. In a bedroom choose a low bed without a tall headboard, stone-coloured bedding and a graphite throw: the image has no bright colour, so in the evening it does not draw the eye more than it should. A third option is a hotel suite, where the horse's black can be repeated in the dark leather of a bench or the wool of a headboard. Place lamps at the sides, low, away from the middle of the wall.

How do you choose the size and material?

At a height of 260 cm, both horses in full need about 3.7 m of width. On a narrower wall, move the crop so that both heads stay in the frame and the blurred rump of the white horse is trimmed.
