CHESTNUT RUSH - galloping horses winter wall mural for dining room

The herd charges straight at the viewer, and snow bursts from under the hooves in a tall, pale cloud. The chestnut brown of the coats and the dark manes stand out against the cool blue background more strongly than in the other winter designs of the collection.

What can you see in the design?

CHESTNUT RUSH shows horses at full gallop, lined up in one row across the middle band of the image. Six heads are clearly visible: five chestnut and one white. The largest horse runs just right of centre, with a dark, flying mane. The white horse pushes its head out from behind it, closer to the middle. On the left two chestnut horses race along, the nearer one with a white star on its forehead, and on the right a lighter horse with a white patch on its forehead and a last one, half hidden in the snowy dust. The background is a cool, grey-blue shade with pale outlines of frosted trees in the upper corners. The bottom is filled with white and bluish snow, laid on in short, bold brushstrokes. On a wall 260 cm high with the full crop (about 465 cm wide), the largest horse measures about 150 cm from ears to hooves, the heads fall within a band of about 120–190 cm above the floor, and the strip of snow under the hooves is about 45 cm.

What sets it apart among the winter herds?

Of the three herds on open snow, this is the darkest and the most dynamic. POWDER STAMPEDE shows golden-beige horses with pale manes, and SNOW DRIFTERS five faint silhouettes in mist.

Which interior does it suit?

Chestnut brown goes well with oak, cognac-coloured leather and brass, which is why the design suits a dining room with a long oak table. The tabletop and chair backs, up to about 90 cm, will cover the snow and the legs; the heads begin higher up. In a restaurant, set a low bench upholstered in grey-blue wool along the wall, with tables with white tablecloths: the back of the bench ends at the height of the snow cloud, and the row of horses is visible from across the room. In a study, one low desk in dark oak is enough. Put a desk lamp with a short arm at the end of the desktop so that the shade stays below the muzzles, that is lower than about 120 cm.

How do you choose the size and material?

The row of horses takes up almost the whole width of the composition, about 390 cm of 465 cm at a height of 260 cm, so on a narrower wall one of the horses will fall outside the crop. At a width of about 280 cm it is worth keeping the four middle horses, with the white one between them, and moving the crop so that the edge of the wall falls between the animals.
