COUNTERPOINT - large palm leaf wall mural for hotels and living rooms

Two palms reach onto the wall from opposite corners: a dark one hangs down from above, a light one grows up from below. Between them lies a calm grey background, so the room gains a clear outline and depth without losing its stillness. Dark graphite at the top and cream at the bottom divide the wall diagonally, so the eye travels across it from the left corner to the right.

What does the design show?

Large, dark graphite palm leaves hang from the top left corner of the image, arching towards the centre. They fill the upper left part of the composition to about three fifths of the width and three quarters of the height, and thin, dark trunks run down along the left edge. Cream leaves on the same scale rise from the bottom right corner and fill the right half almost to the top edge. Low on the left side of the image lies one more pale cream leaf, which ties the two parts together.

The background is grey, with a lighter, misty patch in the top right corner and a warm sandy beige in the lower left part. In the centre you can see fine black splatters, like traces of ink, and the whole image has a painterly, distressed texture. On a wall 260 cm high, the image is about 464 cm wide, the dark crown reaches down about 210 cm and the cream leaves rise to about 230 cm. The leaves are shown as if seen up close, so you can make out the individual leaflets even from the far end of the room.

Which interiors does it suit?

In the living room, place the sofa on the right, beneath the cream leaves, and leave the upper left part with the dark crown free. The graphite, cream and sand of the design pair well with rattan, light wood, linen and tobacco-coloured leather, which is why this large palm leaf wall mural suits colonial style as well as pared-back modernism with concrete.

In the dining room, put it on the wall behind the table: chairs in terracotta or muted pink warm up the grey of the background. It looks best on a wall about 3 m wide or more, where both palms have room to breathe. In a hotel – in the lobby, by the reception desk or in the restaurant – the large scale of the leaves reads clearly from several metres away, and the neutral colours do not compete with the decor.

How do you choose the size and material?

On a narrower wall, shift the crop so that both palms stay visible: the dark one on the left and the light one on the right.
