EDO LEVIATHAN - whale wall mural like a Japanese woodblock print

A navy whale passes over a stormy sea against a sky the colour of ochre and amber. The image resembles an illustration from an old book of sea voyages, so it suits a study as well as a school-age child’s room.

What does the design show?

In EDO LEVIATHAN the whale swims to the left, almost horizontally, across the middle of the wall, and raises its tail on the right. It is navy, with a pale, striped belly; its head, back and long fin are covered with a fine gold floral ornament, and the fin itself has a white, ragged edge. On a wall 260 cm high the whale measures about 2.9 m from snout to tail, and the second, pale fin drops to about 65 cm above the floor.

The background is cream, billowing clouds on a sky the colour of ochre and amber: a smaller one on the left, a large one on the right. The sky has the texture of worn paper with a network of fine scratches. Dark navy waves with white foam rise in the lower corners: on the left of the image they reach about 60 cm, on the right they are lower, about 40 cm. Flat patches of colour and a distinct outline resemble a Japanese woodblock print. Edo is the old name of Tokyo and the period in which this art flourished. The gold of the ornament is a printed colour.

How is it different from similar designs?

KUJIRA RISING and FLOATING WORLD share the same Japanese woodblock style, but have a different colour and movement. There the whale is turquoise and swims diagonally across a golden sky; here it is navy, swims horizontally, and the sky has a lighter, ochre shade.

Which interior does it suit?

In a study and a living room, the details you see up close work well: the gold ornament, the scratches like those on old paper and the muted palette of ochre and navy. A cherry-wood desk, a caramel-coloured leather armchair and a brass lamp repeat the warm colours of the sky. In a living room with a low sofa and mustard cushions, the sofa’s back covers the waves and the tip of the pale fin, and the body with the ornament remains above it.

In a school-age child’s room, this woodblock-style whale wall mural brings something different: a large, clear silhouette, waves and clouds, that is, a scene straight out of an illustrated atlas. Navy and ochre are not tied to any age, so the wall suits a schoolchild’s or a teenager’s room, with an iron bed, a wooden chest and a telescope on a tripod. For a baby’s room there are lighter designs in the collection, for example MILK AND HONEY.

How do you choose the size and material?

We print a single image to the size of your wall. In the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page you enter the dimensions, choose the material and set the crop. At a height of 260 cm the image is about 460 cm wide. On a wall narrower than about 3.1 m the crop will cut the whale: then choose whether to keep the head with the ornament or the tail with the large cloud.

The two main options are Mura Vinyl Canvas and Mura Vinyl Intonaco. Canvas has the weave of natural canvas and is the most versatile: it does not draw attention away from the gold line. Intonaco has a trowelled plaster texture, is structured and gives the wall the impression of an old wall painting. The alternatives are Mura Vinyl Sabbia, which is neither smooth nor satin and has a pronounced coarse sand grain, and Mura Natur: an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic, whose matt finish suits the paper-like character of the design.
