FLOATING WORLD - Japanese wave whale wall mural for a living room

A turquoise whale dives through a sky the colour of old gold, and beneath it dark waves with white foam pile up. The design has the force of a large picture in the style of a Japanese woodblock print and is enough as the whole decoration of a living-room wall.

What does the design show?

In FLOATING WORLD the whale swims diagonally downwards: its tail is high, in the upper left corner, and its head lower, on the right of the image. The back is turquoise, the underside pale, cream-yellow, and a fine gold ornament of spirals runs along the back and head. On a wall 260 cm high the whale stretches for about 3 m, and its fins end about 120 cm above the floor.

The sky takes up a large part of the image: it is the colour of old gold and covered with a network of fine scratches. Cream, billowing clouds sit on both sides of the whale and beneath it. Dark waves with white foam fill the bottom: on the left they reach about 60 cm, and the tallest stands on the right, where the foam rises to about 100 cm. The whole looks like a print on aged paper. The name alludes to ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world”, that is, Japanese art of the Edo period, known mainly for woodblock prints. Gold is a printed colour: a warm yellow in an ochre shade.

How is it different from similar designs?

The twin design in the collection is KUJIRA RISING. There the whale rises towards the upper right corner, the clouds have a powder-pink tint, and the waves form two crests of similar height. FLOATING WORLD has more of the golden sky uncovered, cream clouds without pink and a downward movement towards a tall wave. EDO LEVIATHAN from this family is navy.

Which interior does it suit?

In a living room the design needs low furniture and saturated colours. A rounded sofa upholstered in ochre velvet, a black lacquered table and a brass Art Deco lamp repeat the gold of the sky, and ceramics in celadon echo the colour of the whale. The back of a low sofa will cover the lower waves on the left, and the foam of the tall wave on the right will remain above it.

As a whale wall mural with Japanese waves, FLOATING WORLD also suits a dining room with a walnut table and chairs upholstered in turquoise velvet: at a table you look at the wall up close, so the spiral ornament is visible. A possible use is also a hotel lobby with low tables and armchairs, where a large wall is seen from the entrance.

How do you choose the size and material?

We print the design as a single image to the size of your wall, and you set the crop together with the dimensions and material in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page. When the wall is 260 cm high, the image is about 460 cm wide, and on a wall narrower than about 3.2 m you have to choose: the tail with the back, or the head with the fins and the tall wave.

We put Mura Vinyl Intonaco and Mura Vinyl Canvas first. Intonaco has a trowelled plaster texture and is structured: with the scratches on the golden sky it gives the impression of an old, painted wall. Canvas has the weave of natural canvas and is the most versatile; choose it when the wall is seen up close, at a table. Mura Vinyl Sabbia has a pronounced coarse sand grain and is neither smooth nor satin: consider it if the sky is to have a distinct structure. Mura Natur, an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic, shows the golden colour of the sky in a calm matt finish.

How can you buy with confidence?

Before you order a whole wall, check the shade of the golden sky and the texture of your chosen material at home. A sample is for that: you order it from the product page, a print of about 90 × 50 cm on one or two materials, and we ship it in 1–3 working days.

You create an AI visualisation on a photo of your own room yourself on the product page. On request the DECOMURA team will prepare a studio visualisation in 1–2 working days, and, also on request, the studio will adapt the composition, colours and crop of the design to your interior. Orders are usually completed in 3–7 working days. We ship free to Poland and the countries of Europe, to the rest at the rate shown in the basket. On request we arrange installation anywhere in Europe, after an individual quote, and the printing is eco-friendly and certified.

You will see the other whales, including light and night-time ones, in the Sky Whales collection, and other designs with water and waves in the wall murals with a sea theme category.
