GREAT GREEN GATHERING - painted woodland gathering of animals

Among pale trunks stands a whole gathering of animals, looking straight at you — the bear in the middle clasps his paws, as if before telling a story, the giraffe smiles down from above, and a red-haired girl in a green dress laughs right in the center of the scene. The light is soft and diffused, as if morning were only just brightening the thicket of ferns and leaves. GREAT GREEN GATHERING is a large, densely painted children's illustration in greens, sage and warm beiges, with russet and brown accents in the fur. The design was created for a whole wall in a child's room, where the picture is meant to be the main attraction, not a backdrop.

What do you see in the design?

The composition is horizontal and full, arranged like a group photo. In the foreground sit a panda with a hare, a raccoon, a big gray bear, a white bear and a grayish-brown bear cub, and around them grow fly agarics, parasol mushrooms and white flowers. The middle plane is occupied by a lion with a lush mane, a fox, a small monkey, a giraffe and an elephant with silvery-gray skin; on the sides stand two stags with spreading antlers. Higher up, among the vines and leaves, perch birds and owls — a white owl on the left, a barn owl on the right. The background consists of vertical, pale trunks and misty, almost white glimpses of sky that thin out the green. The technique is painterly: you can see the brush mark, the dry texture of the paint and small white dots, as in an illustrated book. The light falls from above and slightly from behind, through the tree crowns.

What kind of interior does it suit?

The natural place for it is the wall behind the bed or the wall by the play corner in a child's room. Leave the other walls in white or light beige — the green here is dense and enough on its own. It will go well with light wood: birch, oak, plywood, as well as natural-colored linen bedding and a single russet accent, for example a rug or a cushion. On a typical wall the animals in the foreground are close in scale to a young child — the panda, the raccoon and the gray bear reach roughly to an adult's waist. The bottom twenty to thirty centimeters are undergrowth: moss, mushrooms and leaves, which you can cover with a bed, a chest of drawers or a toy chest without losing anything. The scene's center of gravity lies in the middle, on the bear and the girl, so on a narrower wall crop symmetrically from the sides — you will then lose the outermost stags, but the group will stay complete.
