CHEERING THICKET - woodland gathering with raised paws

Morning light breaks through between the trunks and falls on a grassy clearing, where a whole gathering of little forest creatures throws their paws up in the air — as if they had just seen someone they had long been waiting for. All the little faces are turned toward you, smiling, with rosy cheeks; nobody is hiding. This is CHEERING THICKET: a painterly children's illustration with visible brush marks, kept in dense green with russet and orange accents. The design is conceived for one wide wall in a child's room where mornings are meant to be cheerful.

What do you see in the design?

In the foreground grows a dense, dark green undergrowth: ferns, grasses, small white flowers, orange buds and several red fly agarics with white dots. The middle plane is occupied by a row of seven figures standing in a bright, sunlit clearing — two russet foxes on the sides, a dark green bear, a russet hamster, a white fluffy animal, a green hare with long ears and a small green owl. The background is tall tree trunks and a luminous haze in blue and white, through which light filters from above. The composition is horizontal and symmetrical, with a distinct band of brightness in the middle; the palette combines emerald, sage and celadon with rusty orange and occasional touches of red.

What kind of interior does it suit?

It works best on the wall behind a child's bed or on the wall by the play area, where the animals' silhouettes will land at eye level. Leave the other walls in white, cream or very pale sage, and choose furniture in light wood — birch or oak. Pillowcases and a rug in muted russet or mustard will pick up the color of the foxes. What scale and how to crop it?

The figures occupy the middle band of the picture and on a typical wall 260 cm high are roughly the scale of a young child. The bottom 60-70 cm is nothing but a thicket of plants, so you can cover it with a bed, a chest of drawers or a bookcase without harming the composition. The center of gravity lies on the bear and the hamster, just left of the axis. On a narrower wall, crop symmetrically from the sides — you will then lose the outermost foxes, but the row of figures will stay legible; on a lower wall, shorten it from the bottom, not the top, to keep the trunks and the light between the crowns.
