MERINGUE - wall mural with white ginkgo leaves for a dining room

Large white ginkgo leaves arranged in a loose bouquet look like an enlarged oil painting with thickly laid paint. The design gives a dining room or living room the character of a gallery, and the pale, sandy palette leaves room for wood, linen and ceramics.

What can you see in the design?

Eight large white leaves form a bouquet across almost the whole width of the design. On the left side of the image there are two: a large one at the top and a lower one turned to the left. In the middle stand three, and on the right another three, including a smaller one tucked between the larger ones. Thin, beige stalks converge at the bottom edge, slightly to the right of centre.

The leaves look as if the paint had been applied with thick, raised strokes of a palette knife – that is the effect of the image itself; the print is flat, and the texture is given to it only by the chosen material. The white has cream shading at the bases and stands out clearly from the background. The background is sandy beige and pale grey, rubbed back with vertical brushstrokes, with a canvas weave visible in the image and warmer, darker edges at the sides. On a wall 260 cm high the largest leaves are about 100–135 cm wide, and the whole bouquet about 4 m.

Which interiors does it suit?

Dining room. It looks fullest when the table stands in the middle of the room and there is no sideboard by the wall – the bouquet is then visible from the stalks to the top leaves. White and sand go with limestone, whitewashed oak, linen chair covers and stoneware.

Living room. Behind a deep sofa in sandy linen, the backrest will cover the lower stalks and the edges of the lowest leaves, and the rest of the bouquet will stay above it. It suits a modernist interior with whitewashed boards and travertine.

Restaurant. In an intimate dining room with round tables and white tablecloths, the large bouquet becomes a backdrop for guests. The scale of the leaves makes the design legible even from the far end of the room.

How do you choose the size and material?

The bouquet takes up almost the whole width of the image, so on a wall narrower than about 4 m the crop will trim the outermost leaves – choose whether the pair on the left or the trio on the right matters more.
