MODERNIST SUNS - geometric mural with gold circles for a living room

Two gold circles on a white background – the large one high on the left, the smaller one low on the right – organise the wall along a diagonal and give the room rhythm at once. The navy and turquoise of the rectangles add depth, and a thin gold line leads the eye from bottom to top. The overall effect is graphic and cool, warmed by the colour of the gold.

What can you see in the design?

In MODERNIST SUNS the larger circle, light gold in colour, lies in the upper left part of the wall, and the smaller one, in a darker, brownish-gold tone, in the lower right. In the image both have an uneven, wrinkled surface, like paper that has been crumpled and flattened out again. The gold here is a printed colour: a honey tone shading into brown.

The left and central parts are filled with overlapping rectangles: a turquoise one behind the large circle, a navy one beneath it, by the left edge, and further to the right a sea blue and a lighter turquoise. Lower down and beneath the small circle lie pale grey and beige areas. From the bottom, left of centre, a thin gold line runs diagonally towards the top right, and halfway up it is crossed by several short horizontal lines. The upper right part stays white.

It is easy to confuse this design with BRASS MERIDIAN, because both have two gold circles. Here the circles are far apart, the background is white and a diagonal line cuts across the composition; there the circles stand close together on the left, the background is cream and the main lines are vertical and horizontal.

Which room does it suit?

In a living room, put a low sofa in navy or cream in front of the wall: with the full crop its backrest will cover only the bottom band of the composition, while the large circle and the upper rectangles stay above it. Walnut, brass and glass will underline the modernist character of the design. Hang the television on the right, on the white area, so that it does not cover either of the circles.

In a dining room a round table repeats the shape of the circles, and turquoise or navy chairs echo the colours of the rectangles.

In a study the lines and rectangles bring order to the wall behind the desk. In a restaurant the design is read in stages: you see the circles from the entrance, and the lines and worn patches only at the table.

How do you choose the size and material?

At a height of 260 cm the full composition is about 462 cm wide, the large circle is about 90 cm in diameter and the small one about 55 cm. The centre of the small circle falls about 75 cm above the floor, so do not place tall furniture on the right-hand side. The two circles together take up about 315 cm of width; on a narrower wall choose a crop with one circle.
