MOSSY BRANCH CROWD - fairy-tale forest full of little woodland creatures

Golden light filters through the treetops and comes to rest on a mossy branch that cuts across the forest. On it and around it a whole gathering has assembled: a russet hare with long ears, a greenish bear cub resting its paws on the moss, hamsters, squirrels and tiny creatures the size of a pine cone, while one little joker hangs from the branch by outstretched paws and laughs with its belly up. Lower down, on the cap of a huge fly agaric, a russet furry little animal has perched, as if waiting for someone to sit down beside it. It is a dense, painterly illustration in an oil-painting manner — the green of leaves, russet rust and the red of mushrooms, a picture for a whole wall in front of which a child will find someone new every day.

What do you see in the design?

The composition is built by a diagonal, moss-covered branch running from the left side to the upper right corner — it leads the eye through the whole picture. In the foreground grow large, dark green leaves, red fly agarics with white dots and rusty twigs with narrow little leaves. In the middle plane sits a gathering of animals: a hare, a bear cub, hamsters, mice, a squirrel, tiny scaly creatures and a little fantastical dragon with horns, peeking out of the thicket on the left. The background blurs into a pale, overexposed haze between the trunks — the light falls from above on the right and spreads in a warm glow across the entire scene. Palette: deep bottle green and sage, honey yellows, russet rust and the red of mushroom caps.

What kind of interior does it suit?

It will make the strongest impression in a child's room, on the wall behind the bed or by a reading nook — the scene is dense and full of characters, so it is better to leave the other walls in white, cream or very pale sage. Furniture in light wood, sand-colored linen and a single russet accent — a blanket, a cushion or a lampshade — will pick it up well. What scale and how to crop it?

On a typical wall, the hare and the bear cub on the branch are the size of a good-sized plush toy — large enough that you can recognize them from the other end of the room. The scene's center of gravity lies in the upper half, at the height of the branch, so with a wall behind the bed it is worth setting the crop so that the animals land above the headboard. The bottom band of dense leaves is the least important for the composition and can be safely covered by a chest of drawers, a bookcase or a skirting board. On a narrower wall, crop symmetrically from the sides — you will then lose the outermost fly agarics, but the gathering on the branch will stay whole.
