PEARL MAELSTROM - sea whirlpool mural made of dots in shades of blue

From a distance it is a spiral whirlpool of water that leads the eye to the pale centre of the wall. Up close the image breaks up into thousands of tiny dots in blues, turquoises and white. This abstract ocean wall mural gives a room depth and a cool, maritime calm, without a single sharp outline. It is a design for people who prefer cool blues to warm gold.

What can you see in the design?

PEARL MAELSTROM is built from tightly packed, rounded dots and flecks, like a mosaic or a pointillist picture. The pale, light turquoise eye of the whirlpool lies in the middle of the image; here the dots are at their finest and merge into a smooth patch of light. Around the eye circle rings of ever deeper blue, darkest in the upper left part. A broad band of white dots, similar to foam, sweeps in an arc from the left edge across the bottom towards the right side, and the upper right corner lightens to cream. The tonality is cool, blue-turquoise. There is almost no gold here: between the dots you can see only the odd light spark. If you are looking for gold accents and thick, painterly foam, take a look at the twin design UNDERTOW; PEARL MAELSTROM is cooler and bluer, built entirely of dots, with a large pale eye in the middle.

On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 462 cm wide, the eye of the whirlpool about 75 cm wide and about 85 cm high, and the individual dots about 1–3 cm. Standing by the wall, you see every dot separately; from the other end of the room you read only the smooth movement of the spiral.

Which room does it suit?

In an entrance hall the whirlpool sets up a perspective: the pale eye in the middle of the wall draws the gaze from the threshold and adds depth to the space. A low bench in pale oak is all that is needed beneath it. In the relaxation area of a hotel or spa, cool blues and the absence of sharp lines create a calm mood; match them with cream fabrics, travertine and pale oak.

In a bathroom PEARL MAELSTROM looks good behind a round freestanding bath, because its shape repeats the spiral, and white stone and brushed nickel go with the white dots of foam. In each of these interiors choose a wall you can stand three or four metres away from: only then does the mosaic come together into a whirlpool. Cool accessories suit this design better than brass: chrome, glass and greys.

How do you choose the size and material?

We print PEARL MAELSTROM as a single image to the size of your wall. You set the dimensions, material and crop in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page; make sure the eye of the whirlpool stays in the crop, preferably close to the middle of the wall, because without it the spiral loses its axis.

The choice of material matters more than usual here, because its texture overlaps with the tiny dots.
