RUSSET LIMEWASH - wall mural with large ginkgo leaves for a dining room

Four large ginkgo leaves stand in a row like fans spread out on a limewashed wall, and beneath them soft patches of ochre and grey-blue spill out. The image is warm but not heavy: white and stone beige brighten the room, and the rust-coloured leaf on the left gives it one stronger note.

What can you see in the design?

The leaves stand on long, thin stalks, from left to right. The first, translucent, is the colour of cinnamon and rust. Next to it spreads a wide white leaf with a thick, painterly texture, in the right part of the middle a smaller, cream one with an ochre stain, and by the right edge a large white leaf with a brown base. Beneath the fans spill watercolour patches in ochre, beige and grey-blue, darkest in the lower right part; some form blurred shapes of further leaves.

The background is the colour of stone and linen, with paler, cream patches by the edges that look like chips of old plaster – this is an element of the image, flat in the print. On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 460 cm wide, the leaf fans are about 90–130 cm tall, the widest white one is about 175 cm, and the lower edges of the fans fall about 105–130 cm above the bottom edge of the image.

Which interiors does it suit?

In a dining room the fans begin above the tabletop and the chair backs, so all four leaves are visible, even when guests are sitting at the table. Oak, travertine and linen upholstery in sand or grey-blue repeat the colours of the image, and a rust-coloured table runner will pick up the cinnamon leaf.

In a hotel room or a guesthouse with a Mediterranean feel, the design goes with terracotta, sand-coloured linen and a rust-coloured throw, and the low headboard of the bed does not reach the leaves. In a bedroom in a pale, Scandinavian version – with a whitewashed floor and oat-coloured bedding – cool light from the north brings out the grey-blue patches on the right of the image. The design suits wabi-sabi, rustic styles and interiors with lime plaster.

On a wall about 3.5 m wide the first three leaves will fit in full – if the rust-coloured accent matters to you, do not move the crop too far to the right.
