What does the design show?

The background is grey-green: darker at the top and lightening towards the bottom, crossed by horizontal, rubbed-back streaks and a fine weave reminiscent of canvas. Against it, cream seed heads with soft, feathery tufts stand out clearly. On the left of the image stand three large seed heads bending in different directions, in the centre a tall seed head reaches the top edge, and on the right of the image you can see a smaller, straight tuft and a tall plume right by the edge. In the bottom left corner, behind the leaves, one more pale seed head shows through.

The lower half is filled with long, sharp reed leaves in a dark olive grey, densest in the centre and on the right of the image. It is one of the highest-contrast designs in the collection: pale plants on a dark background. On a wall 260 cm high, the image is about 460 cm wide, the individual tufts are about 90–140 cm long, and the dense band of leaves takes up roughly the bottom 120 cm of the wall.

Which interior does it suit?

Living room. The dark background ties together a pale sofa, linen and wood, while the cream tufts echo the colour of the fabrics. A low sofa covers only the band of leaves, so the seed heads remain in full view. The design also works well with warm wood and tobacco-coloured leather, as the living room setting in a Victorian villa shows.

Study. A grey-green wall behind the desk provides a calm backdrop for work, and in lamplight the pale plumes stand out sharply against the dark background. It suits modernist interiors with birch and simple, clean-lined furniture.

Restaurant or intimate dining room. Dimmed evening light heightens the contrast of cream and olive, the dark leaves disappear behind an upholstered banquette, and the pale tufts stay visible above the guests’ heads. Choose a wall with good daylight or warm artificial light – in a very dark corner the tufts lose their definition.

On a wall narrower than about 4 m, shift the crop so that both the tall seed head in the centre and the plume on the right of the image fit; on a wider wall you will see the whole composition.
