SELENITE - ginkgo wall mural on a marbled background for a living room

Warm grey with delicate stone veining and white leaves that show through one another give the wall the calm of pale marble, but without its coolness. The plants grow from the floor, so the room gains a light, vertical rhythm, and the upper part of the wall remains a breathing space for the eye.

What can you see in the design?

About twenty white-and-cream ginkgo leaves on long, thin, pale stalks grow from the bottom edge. They fall into three loose groups. On the left side of the image the leaves pile up one above another from the upper quarter all the way down. In the middle two fans reach almost to the top edge, and on the right the tallest leaf rises high above two wide fans set at mid-height.

The leaves are semi-transparent: where they overlap, you can see the outline of the fan behind. At the bases they have beige-brown shading and fine, radiating veins. The background is a warm grey with marbled veining and lighter clouds at the top; the top band stays almost empty, and the leaves become more numerous towards the bottom. On a wall 260 cm high the largest fans are about 90–100 cm wide, and the whole image is about 4.6 m wide.

Which interiors does it suit?

Living room. The grey and cream go with travertine, walnut and oatmeal bouclé. A low sofa will cover only the lowest leaves, and the tall stalks with fans will stay above the backrest – just like in our living room setting in an Art Deco apartment.

Bedroom. Behind a low, upholstered bed in a stone colour, the design works like a soft headboard for the whole wall. The palette is muted, so it looks good with a wool rug and grey linen bedding.

Study. The pale background does not darken a working room, and the vertical arrangement of the stalks brings order to the wall behind a walnut desk. In raking daylight the overlapping leaves gain depth.

How do you choose the size and material?

On a wall narrower than about 4.6 m at a height of 260 cm, choose in the crop whether to keep the tall group on the left or the two wide fans on the right.

Hold it against the wall by the window and by the lamp and check whether the warm grey matches your floor and fabrics. If you want the background to be warmer or the leaves to be set more densely, the studio will adjust the composition, colours and crop of the design to the interior.
