SUMI STEMS - ginkgo wall mural on tall stems

Tall, thin stems and leaves rising above a misty meadow give the wall a calm, vertical rhythm. The greys and taupe on a cream background resemble diffused ink on paper, so the design quietens the interior, and pale wood, linen and ceramics look natural next to it.

What can you see in the design?

Over a dozen ginkgo leaves on very long, thin stalks grow from the bottom of the image like tall stems. They fall into two groups – one on the left side of the image and in the middle, the other in the right part – with a narrower, lighter gap between them. The leaves come in shades of grey, graphite, taupe and beige: some are darker and distinct, others semi-transparent and blurred like watercolour. The lower third is filled by a misty zone of pale, overlapping leaves, and the upper part by a smooth, cream background resembling paper.

On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 460 cm wide. The largest leaves are about 75–90 cm wide, the smallest about 25 cm, and the tallest end about 20–25 cm below the top edge. The misty band at the bottom is about 85 cm high, a little more than the height of a table top.

Which interiors does it suit?

In a dining room the table and chairs with backs will cover only the misty band at the bottom, and the leaves on their stems will remain whole above them. The greys and taupe go with pale oak, chairs with slatted backs and Japandi-style ceramics. In a hall the vertical rhythm of the stems leads the eye upwards, and a low bench or chest of drawers will fit in the zone of mist. Slender stems also look good on a narrow, tall wall between two doors, where one group of leaves will fit. In a study the muted palette without strong colours does not compete with the desk and the shelves on the neighbouring walls, and the cream background goes well with birch and whitewashed pine. The design suits Japandi, wabi-sabi and Scandinavian styles.

How do you choose the size and material?

SUMI STEMS is one large image printed to the size of your wall; you set the width, height, material and crop in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page. On a wall narrower than the image you decide which group of stems to keep in the centre, so that the lighter gap between the groups falls, for example, above the table or the chest of drawers.

On the cream, paper-like background Mura Vinyl Canvas looks good – the most versatile material, with the texture of natural canvas, through which the watercolour leaves take on the character of a painting. The second main choice is Mura Vinyl Intonaco: structured, with the texture of trowelled plaster, which in raking light deepens the misty lower band. As alternatives you have Mura Vinyl Sabbia, with a pronounced coarse sand grain, neither smooth nor satin, and Mura Natur – an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic, whose matt surface suits the paper-like character of the background.
