TORN WASHI - watercolour wall mural in turquoise and cream for bedrooms

A light wall that looks like a collage of torn watercolour paper: warm cream, a band of blurred turquoise and a few thin gold lines. In a bedroom or a dressing room it works like soft daylight – it brightens the room and does not compete with fabrics or wood.

What can you see in the design?

TORN WASHI is an abstract watercolour wall mural that resembles layers of thick paper with ragged edges, soaked in diluted paint. Warm cream fills the top and most of the bottom of the wall. Across the middle, from the left edge to the right, runs a wide band of light turquoise: strongest in the upper left part, growing paler towards the right and sloping slightly downwards. Above the band lie cream patches with a shadow beneath their edges, which gives the look of relief.

Several thin gold lines cross the wall. The longest runs horizontally, roughly halfway up. To the left of the centre it meets a vertical line coming down from the top edge, and in the very middle a branch leaves it, turning towards the bottom right corner. Here is the only larger patch in the colour of gold: elongated, with a grainy pattern. You can tell this design from its twin GOSSAMER TIDE by the layout: here the turquoise is a horizontal band between two zones of cream, and the gold lines are straight and few.

On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 462 cm wide, the turquoise band about 110 cm high and the gold patch about 125 cm long.

What kind of interior does it suit?

In a bedroom, position the bed so that the headboard ends beneath the turquoise band; the whole watercolour part of the design will then remain above the linen bedding. Whitewashed beams, travertine, light oak and glass suit this wall: natural materials, close to the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

In a dressing room the design gives clothes a neutral backdrop: the cream does not impose itself on the colours of the fabrics, and the turquoise band adds freshness without dark patches. The third place is a study or a writing corner with a light desk and a chair with woven cane. The composition is horizontal and calm, so it does not distract when you sit side-on to the wall.

How do you choose the size and material?

You get one image printed to the size of your wall, with no repeating pattern. You choose the width, height, material and crop in the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page. The gold patch lies low, in the bottom 55 cm or so of the wall on the right. If you want it to be visible, do not block that corner with furniture, or shift the crop.

The relief in this design is part of the image, that is, a drawing of shadows and edges; the texture you can feel under your fingers comes only from the material. The main choices are Mura Vinyl Canvas and Mura Vinyl Intonaco. Canvas has the texture of natural canvas and is the most versatile; this texture echoes the look of watercolour paper. Intonaco has the texture of trowelled plaster, with a pronounced structure, and adds a tactile quality to the cream planes, whose raised areas are only an image. The alternatives are Mura Vinyl Sabbia, a distinct coarse sand grain texture, neither smooth nor satin, close to the grainy look of the gold patch, and Mura Natur: an eco-friendly non-woven, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic, whose matt finish suits the light, powdery colours.
