TRACERY - pale ginkgo wall mural for a hallway

Large, pale leaves grow from the floor on slender stems and fill the wall in almost a single colour – creamy white with finely drawn white veins. A hallway, which is often narrow and darker than the rest of the home, gains a light, calm wall with a botanical motif visible from the doorstep.

What can you see in the design?

The ginkgo leaves in white and cream are outlined with a thin white line, and radiating veins are marked in the middle of each fan. They grow from the bottom on long, thin stems and form a band across the whole width of the image. On the left side of the image they rise highest – one leaf touches the top edge – and on the right a tall leaf ends roughly a fifth of the height from the top. The middle of the upper half remains a smooth background in an ivory shade. The leaves are semi-transparent and overlap, so the pattern of one shows through the other.

The lower band is covered with thickly applied, cracked paint in cream, beige and pale grey-blue – in a flat print it looks like old, flaking plaster. On a wall 260 cm high the largest leaves are about 40–55 cm wide, and the band of cracked texture at the bottom about 70 cm high.

Where does this design look its best?

Hallway and hall. The pale, almost single-colour palette does not narrow the corridor, and the vertical stems lead the eye upwards. The design suits a geometric floor in black and white and an ash bench with a wool cushion, as in the hall setting in a Viennese Art Nouveau townhouse.

Bathroom. The cream-white palette goes with white marble, matt stone and teak; behind a freestanding bath the wall with leaves becomes a calm, painterly backdrop for your bath.

Bedroom. In a quiet interior with pale wood and undyed linen, in the spirit of Japanese simplicity or wabi-sabi, large leaves above a low bed give scale and calm without strong colour.

How do you choose the size and material?

At a height of 260 cm the full design is about 4.6 m wide. On a narrow hall wall you can keep in the crop the left part, with leaves right under the top edge, or the right one, with a tall leaf and a wider band of smooth background.
