UNDERTOW - sea whirlpool wall mural in deep turquoise

Dark turquoise water twists into a spiral, and cream foam sweeps a broad arc around it: this is how the sea looks from above. This turquoise sea wall mural brings deep colour and clear movement into an interior, so a single wall is enough for a room to gain character. Sparks in the colour of gold, scattered across the depths, warm the chill of the water.

What can you see in the design?

UNDERTOW shows a whirlpool of sea water seen from above, in a painterly rather than a photographic convention. The dark, deep water takes up the upper right and central part of the image, and just below the centre it twists into the pale eye of the spiral. The cream foam, which looks as if it had been applied in thick brush strokes, starts at the top, left of centre, descends in an arc and runs along the bottom edge as far as the right corner. The left side is filled with a lighter, greenish turquoise made of tiny dots. In the upper right part, sparks and fine cracks in the colour of gold are scattered over the dark water; this is a printed colour in a warm shade, which does not shine like metal.

On a wall 260 cm high the image is about 462 cm wide, the dark water about 285 cm, and the eye of the spiral about 50 cm; its centre falls about 115 cm above the floor. UNDERTOW differs from PEARL MAELSTROM, which is built entirely of dots and kept in cool blues, in its darker, greener water, thick painterly foam and gold sparks.

Which room does it suit?

In a living room UNDERTOW is a one-wall design, usually the wall behind the sofa. A backrest up to about 90 cm will leave the eye of the spiral above the line of the furniture, and white linen, travertine and pale wood stand out clearly against the dark water. Most of the detail lies in the lower and left part of the image, where the foam runs, so low furniture suits it better than tall built-in units. Leave the other walls light, because a deep turquoise darkens a room.

In a study the dark turquoise looks good with mahogany, walnut and navy leather, and a brass desk lamp echoes the gold sparks. In a hotel living room or a seaside lobby the design replaces nautical decorations with one strong picture: from a few metres away you see the whole movement of the water, up close the dots and the brush marks.

How do you choose the size and material?

The whole UNDERTOW whirlpool is one image, which we print to the size of your wall. In the “Calculate price and order” configurator on the product page you choose the dimensions, material and crop; the most important thing is that the eye of the spiral and the arc of foam on the left stay in it, because the dark water on the right can be trimmed, although some of the gold sparks will be lost.

For this whirlpool the main materials are Mura Vinyl Canvas and Mura Vinyl Intonaco. Canvas, the most versatile, has the texture of natural canvas, against which the thick foam looks like a fragment of an oil painting. Intonaco, the structural one, has the texture of trowelled plaster and adds depth to the large, dark expanse of water. As an alternative consider Mura Vinyl Sabbia: its pronounced coarse sand grain texture works with the dots on the left side. Mura Natur is an eco-friendly, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic non-woven; its matt finish suits the deep, dark water and the cream foam.
