WIND ETCHING - wall mural with sketched pampas grass for a study

The wind passes across this wall: pampas grass plumes lean mostly to the right, and beneath them a band of fine blades grows dense. The drawing recalls an old etching, so the room takes on the focused calm of an artist's workroom and the warmth of light beige. Yet there is no strong colour to pull the eye all day long.

What does the design show?

Each plume is built from dense, fine linework, as in an etching. The centre has a darker, grey-brown tone, while the edges lighten to cream. On the left of the image, two tall plumes rise up. In the middle stands a smaller one and, next to it, the largest, and at its base another plume lies almost horizontally, turned to the left. On the right of the image there are two more, with the outermost one cut by the edge. The background is a light greige with a cloudy, rubbed texture, lightening to cream at roughly half its height. The lower half is filled with dense blades in grey olive and taupe. On a wall 260 cm high, the whole image is about 460 cm wide. The largest plumes then measure about 100–110 cm, and the band of blades takes up roughly the bottom 130 cm of the wall.

Which interior does it suit?

A study is the first choice: at your desk you look at the wall from 1–2 metres away, so you can see the individual lines in the plumes. The design pairs well with dark oak, brass and whitewashed walls. In a living room, hang it behind a low sofa: the backrest will hide only part of the blades, while the plumes stay fully visible above it. Oatmeal linen and cognac leather echo the warm taupe of the image, so the design suits minimalist and Japandi interiors. In a bedroom, the light background and muted palette do not compete with the bedding. The plumes above the headboard look best in the warm light of a side window or a bedside lamp, which brings out the creamy edges of the grasses.

How do I choose the size and material?

At a height of 260 cm, the whole composition will fit on a wall about 4.6 metres wide. On a narrower wall, choose a crop with the largest plume and the one lying at its base. As our main materials we recommend Mura Vinyl Canvas with a natural canvas weave, the most versatile option, which with the fine linework gives the impression of a print pressed onto fabric, and Mura Vinyl Intonaco with a trowelled plaster texture, which accentuates the rubbed, cloudy background. An alternative is Mura Vinyl Sabbia with a pronounced coarse sand grain, neither smooth nor satin – choose it for a wall viewed from several metres away, because up close the grain competes with the delicate linework. The second alternative is Mura Natur, an eco-friendly, matt, odourless and hypoallergenic non-woven; its matt surface lets the creamy areas of the design look calm even in the light of a bedside lamp.
